Step 7

ONBOARDING AND INITIAL PERFORMANCE

EXPECTATIONS

Day 1 Culture

At Amazon, onboarding begins with the expectation that every new hire acts with ownership from the very first day. Employees are encouraged to take responsibility for understanding their role, asking questions proactively, and identifying how their work connects to customer outcomes. There is a strong emphasis on self-direction, meaning new hires are expected to engage actively rather than wait for instructions at every step.

Learning expectations are high, especially during the initial days. Amazon operates in a fast-moving environment where processes, tools, and systems may be complex. New employees are expected to absorb information quickly, seek clarification when needed, and apply learning immediately. Curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from mistakes are viewed as strengths during this stage.

Training and Ramp-Up Period

The training and ramp-up period at Amazon is role-specific and structured, designed to help employees reach full productivity efficiently. Depending on the position, onboarding may include classroom-style training, system walkthroughs, shadowing experienced team members, and hands-on practice.

During this period, performance benchmarks are clearly defined. New hires are expected to demonstrate steady improvement toward established productivity, quality, and safety standards. While perfection is not expected immediately, consistent progress is essential. Managers closely monitor ramp-up performance to ensure employees are developing the skills and behaviors required for long-term success.
